Mentoring Spotlight: How to Build a Media Empire

How SCORE helped.

Written by Joleen Small

Building a media empire from the ground up isn’t the easiest thing to do. Sarah Smith* knows that for sure. She’s been toying around with the idea of starting one for some time, and officially began the pre-start-up phase of her business in November 2020. Her venture, MediaCreationsCo*, is a content and multimedia platform designed to give content creators and creative entrepreneurs a place to learn how to make their own projects take off. Here, new business owners may “learn all about creative business strategies told through a pop culture narrative, but with original content” as Sarah puts it. They may also participate in product placement on her channel to promote their businesses.

Once her idea was formed, turning it into an actual business proved to be a bit more challenging. Sarah was told at one point that the creative field wasn’t financially sustainable, so she put her interest in content creation aside for a while. She instead pursued a different career path, that included working as a marketing project manager for a nonprofit where she learned the business side of content creation. Soon, she started helping others with their content needs. “I would often advise my creative friends about the different strategies to organize their endeavors. Now I’m creating a platform filled with business strategies for creators and entrepreneurs alike,” Sarah explains.

However, she still needed help organizing her own business. Sarah began taking multiple classes and workshops, but felt stuck and needed assistance learning what the next steps were. “What I needed to focus on was having a business mentor,” she says. “I needed guidance to really understand how to organize my efforts.” She turned to SCORE Westchester for assistance. There she met mentor Anne Kasdin, a specialist in branding and digital marketing. “I felt like I wasn’t progressing and felt discouraged,” Sarah recalls before coming to SCORE Westchester. However, with Anne’s assistance, she was able to develop a new business name, conduct market research on her competitors, recraft her mission statement, and come up with a logo design, among other things. Soon, Sarah felt like she was on the right track and ready to move on to the next phase of her business.

She’ll continue using SCORE Westchester’s mentoring services to help with the branding portion of her company as she works on growing her following. With time and effort, she’ll be able to pick up brand sponsorships and move into merchandise sales. It looks like we could be looking at the next interrupter in the digital media space!
