FamilyTales Photography, Jaime Warburton
“I have had a camera in my hand since childhood,” FamilyTales Photography owner Jaime Warburton remembers. In 2008, she started shadowing a fellow photographer at weddings and found herself shooting weddings herself. “In 2012, I found my true passion in newborn and family photography,” she says. She decided to start FamilyTales Photography, offering maternity, newborn, and family photography in the studio and on location.
This single mother of three knows the importance of time management. But business operations? “I was completely confused by taxes. I had no bookkeeping system in place. I really had no records other than the information given to me for invoicing purposes,” Warburton admits. “Once I met my mentor, Jerry, I realized how much help I needed from SCORE to begin running a legitimate business.”
She quadrupled her income from 2014 to 2015 and although she has raised her prices considerably, she’s scheduled out three to four months in advance.
“My business is organized!” Warburton says. She recently hired an assistant, focuses on working “smarter, not harder,” and now gets to spend more time with her family.
She says X still gives her homework every time they meet.
Warburton met with mentor Jerry ____ every six weeks to get her business organized and ready to grow. X provided suggestions on how to get Warburton’s name out in the community so she could build her business full-time, not just as a side project. In May 2014 (“After much encouragement from Jerry), Warburton quit both her full- and part-time jobs and opened a home studio.
“All these [successes] are only in place because of Jerry’s knowledge and guidance,” Warburton says. “I can sleep at night without wondering if I am doing things all wrong. I can relax and focus on the part of my business I love: taking beautiful pictures.”
