After many years of serving men, women and children as a hair stylist, Erin Cosgrove knew she wanted to do things differently. “I was motivated to work with cleaner, greener products that are more readily available, as well as to recycle as much as possible to reduce our waste impact.” The result: Stellar Hair Studio, a hair salon that provides the best of both the barbering and hairdressing worlds. “Your hair appointment should be the best appointment of your day,” Cosgrove says.
The mother of four young children, Cosgrove was anxious about starting a salon during the busy season and managing her work and family life. She sought guidance from SCORE mentors as she launched her business.
“I have successfully opened my business,” Cosgrove says, and “have business coming in every day!”
She advises potential SCORE clients to determine what kind of business they are looking to start before seeking a mentor’s help. “I would also encourage them to ask as many questions as they can and take notes!”
Cosgrove wanted help writing her business plan, along with encouragement to stay focused. She attended online workshops about the business-plan writing process and also attended a workshop about business lending.
Mentor Glenn Lesky advised Cosgrove on commercial leases and the questions she should ask before settling on a location for her business. She also worked with mentor John Hess alongside Glenn to determine financial projections for her salon.
Cosgrove met with Lesky a few times each year, and kept in touch by email and phone. “I am still in contact with him, and will continue to work with him as my business develops,” she says.
