My successes.

“Buying Local and Selling Local” was never a more appropriate expression to describe a business than it is for Rooted. Rooted is a retail gift shop located in New London, PA. They primarily source goods from local suppliers and artisans and cater to local clientele. Not only is it a place for locals of the area to grab a gift, a snack, or catch up with a friend or neighbor, but it is also a place where visitors stop to get a taste of our local personality and talents.

Founded in 2014 by Betsy Beehler, Sandi Bunker, and Ashley Rector, Rooted bucked the traditional trends of a small startup business by becoming successful after just one year without a formal Business Plan. The building was the spark that ignited the fire within the owners of Rooted. Ashley and Betsy came to SCORE to formalize their business approach and to establish a plan for the future of the business. With SCORE mentors, Steve Crumrine, Ruder Schill, and Carl Caruso, the owners submitted to Financial Review and Planning, Marketing and Sales Strategies, and Business Planning for Growth.

Located at the corner of State Road and Route 896, a historically famous crossroads of the area, Rooted carries unique foods, home goods, jewelry, clothing, art, and more. Their top sellers range from gourmet, ready-to-eat popcorn, to barn-wood signs, local honey, and handmade jewelry. The bulk of their merchandise is sourced locally, ranging generally from Newark, DE to Lancaster, PA. Rooted does not have any official full-time employees, but is staffed by a group of seven loyal, hardworking women. After building a solid foundation of over 200 local artisans, they have begun adding wholesale suppliers based on requests of customers and to round out their merchandise mix. Rooted continues to pay out over 150 local artists monthly, based on individual sales.

Due to the character and the love they have for the Franklin Inn (the building in which they are currently in), Rooted has no plan to move from the current 1,000-square-foot storefront. For 2018, they will begin to expand their business with an online store presence. Ashley and Betsy meet with their SCORE mentors two times a year to insure the business remains stable and on track for sufficient growth. When the time comes to grow, their SCORE mentors will be ready to assist in the process.
