My successes.

I opened my storefront in Frederick, Maryland, and am also now supplying my pound cakes to some local small businesses. The future is bright!

What do you do?

I bake gourmet pound cakes to order. No artificial ingredients. Lots of different flavors and joy in every bite! I wanted to bring this "southern traditional dessert" to this area.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always loved to bake and knew I wanted to make a business of it someday, never thinking I would do it in the middle of a pandemic. It was as good a time as any! With the encouragement of family and friends, I get to bring joy to people through my pound cakes.

I had just had my second child and realized that I needed more support with my business. I felt overwhelmed juggling my business and life with young children. My sister -- also a chef -- reminded me about SCORE which I had used to help me in an earlier business.

What's special about your business?

Surprisingly, it is hard to find baked-to-order pound cakes in Frederick and Montgomery Counties. After a fruitless search by a Frederick County couple, their Oregon-based daughter found Priscilla's Pound Cakes online and ordered them the rum pound cake -- same as they served at their wedding -- to celebrate their special anniversary. Pound cakes are my sole focus.

What is your relationship with SCORE? SCORE client What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

I had just had my second child and realized that I needed more support with my business. I felt overwhelmed juggling my business and life with young children. My sister -- also a chef -- reminded me about SCORE which I had used to help me in an earlier business. I requested a mentor and was assigned, Maria Lewis.

How SCORE helped.

I was approached by a food broker who was interested in having me mass-produce and white-label my pound cakes for others. Maria helped me think through the logistics (time, equipment, labor) and, most importantly, how this effort would impact my need to balance family and business without feeling overwhelmed or losing my passion for the business. With her guidance and encouragement, I decided to take a slower, more local approach to growing my business that fit my present needs. Maria gave me the courage to start developing partnerships with local businesses, helping me to create a prospect list and practice the pitch.

What's great about my mentor?

Maria is very encouraging, supportive, and empowering. Most importantly, she is very sincere in her efforts to help me succeed. It's like having a confidante in your corner who says "This is good," or "This is bad." I totally trust her expertise. She's like an "Auntie."

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Take advantage of SCORE's free mentoring services. Whether it's for brainstorming or providing a roadmap, mentoring helps you focus.

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

Having a mentor is essential for whatever stage of business you're in. They provide that extra insight, that extra encouragement along with the tools and resources you need to grow.
