We are a full-service orthodontic clinic using braces and Invisalign to treat dental crowding and malocclusion. We specialize in early intervention and management of bite and jaw issues and cosmetic alignment of the teeth.
My journey started in 1985 when my family moved to Bend, OR, and my mother became the first female physician at BMC. My father wanted to make an impact on juvenile delinquents and help them become happy, healthy citizens in our community. He dedicated 30 years of his life to troubled youths and 18 years as the Deschutes County Juvenile Justice Department Director. Upon his untimely death in 2008, the building was named posthumously in his honor to celebrate the work he did had done for all the youths in our community. To this day, it stands as the "Dennis M. Maloney Deschutes County Justice Center" on the North End of town.
During his tenure there, on the first floor of that building, he and Dr. HM Kemple, a local dentist, took it upon themselves to create the "Kemple Children's Dental Clinic," a non-profit dental volunteer clinic that provided free services to children in our community. The clinic served the community for years with the generous support of other Bend Dentists after Dr. Kemple's passing. Dr. Kemple's warm and generous spirit impacted me that I will never shake. It was the impetus for me to attend dental school and become a dentist myself.
While my mom served passionately as a physician at BMC, my sister served as a physician with St. Charles, and my other sister as a psychologist with St. Charles, I have found my true calling in orthodontics. We started our clinic from scratch in 2018 and will celebrate our third birthday this month.
I am humbled to become part of such a powerful dental community after shadowing Dr. HM Kemple, Dr. Jeff Timm, Dr. Julie Panchura, and Dr. Steven Rogers to help solidify my passion for the profession.
It's been a long journey home, but worthwhile indeed.
We are an all-women-managed clinic. I started the clinic from scratch, with zero patients.
The high points have been the rewarding outcome of helping patients achieve dental health. The low points have been navigating COVID as a healthcare office to ensure we follow all current CDC recommendations to protect our patients.
I learned that true leadership is an active word. Owning a business is an ongoing exercise in learning, asking questions, assessing, and then re-assessing what works and what doesn't.
SCORE was recommended to me by a former SCORE client. She felt her mentorship with SCORE was crucial when starting a new business and writing the business plan.
SCORE has been instrumental in the entire business start up, including but not limited to: the business plan, HIPAA compliance, PCI and credit card compliance, OSHA compliance, HR and staffing, the new hire process, staff hourly compensation guidelines, online and in-person marketing, goal setting, and financial support when balancing the books and assessing the bank loan.
My SCORE mentor was the perfect fit. He brought over 30 years of industry experience with financial planning/HR/Hiring/HIPAA/OSHA/ expertise that was incredibly helpful for us. He was proficient in healthcare start-ups, despite dentistry not being his primary work experience. He was an excellent listener, coach, and mentor throughout the COVID pandemic. In a new era of COVID compliance, he was calm, professional, and worked with us to find appropriate resources to stay abreast on protocol, as well as manage staff during a mandatory shutdown.
My best advice would be to locate and connect with a SCORE mentor ASAP. Meet with them regularly in person to help you stay on track and keep your goals clear. This will prevent procrastination as well as staying on task.
