Jamie Nowlin started Black Hills Leasing in October 2015 with an eye toward helping military service members with property management. Black Hills Leasing helps both property owners and renters in the Rapid City, S.D., metropolitan area by providing streamlined services for collecting rent, requesting maintenance, screening tenants and more. The software the company uses allows owners to compare their rental prices to other properties in their area, view statements and market their properties.
Nowlin sought out mentoring from SCORE after she was approached with an offer to purchase another leasing and property management company. She worked with SCORE mentor Angela Love, who helped her review the company’s documents and draw up projections. Love also helped her set goals and focus on the business’ strengths and unique qualities.
Nowlin learned more about business plans, marketing and social media by attending the 2018 SCORE conference in Reno, Nev.
Nowlin advises other small business owners to “know what their dream is, how they are set apart, and meet with a SCORE mentor to get them on the right path.”
Last year, Black Hills Leasing tripled their business. They expect their business to double again this coming year. The company also added both a full-time and a part-time employee. Nowlin was named a 2018 American Small Business Championship finalist.
