Blue Reason is at the forefront of sustainable gardening and poultry health. We are transforming the industry with our innovative products that are entirely organic, fully recycled, and powered by renewable energy. In the short term, the company is focused on providing chicken dust baths and fertilizers made from recycled waste materials. In the long term, we aim to develop additional products from waste materials to further promote the circular economy.

What inspired you to start your business?

I graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Missouri. While studying, I discovered that the University power plant produced an industrial waste high in organic nutrients. I researched its uses and patented a high-performing plant fertilizer. While investigating distribution strategies, I identified other potential uses and developed additional products.

What's special about your business?

Blue Reason is committed to sustainable, environmentally friendly products. Because its raw materials are waste products, its projected COGS are very low, and it plays a key role in recycling a current waste product into a high performing and cost effective products.

What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

I first met SCORE at a business expo shortly after graduation. As a result of a conversation with a SCORE volunteer at the show (who is now one of my mentors), it was obvious that I would benefit from the business knowledge and experience that SCORE offered.

How SCORE helped.

With a degree in biology but limited business education, my SCORE mentors have been invaluable. They helped me develop a business and marketing plan, create a financial model, strategize funding, and provided guidance through the challenges of starting a business.

What's great about my mentor?

My two mentors, Dick Goldberg and Greg Sahrmann, provide comprehensive business mentoring, focusing on a marketing and business strategy, financial modeling and funding. Over the past three years, they have dedicated significant time and effort to support my business and offer constant availability. Their guidance has helped me navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Over these 3 years, we have had over 150 formal and informal sessions and rewritten and revised the business, marketing and funding plans numerous times. Thanks to their help and encouragement, I secured my first round of equity funding on April 22, 2025.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Having a mentor greatly improves your chance of success. Starting a business demands knowledge that new entrepreneurs often lack. A mentor's experience can make the difference between thriving and failing.

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

Persistence is particularly important when dealing with the inevitable setbacks and challenges that come with starting a business. For instance, there were times when I felt overwhelmed by the complexities of financial projections or marketing strategies, but my mentors were there to guide and support me. This experience has taught me that success in business isn't just about having a great idea; it's also about having the determination to see it through, no matter the obstacles.

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is the importance of networking. Building relationships with other entrepreneurs and professionals in my industry has provided opportunities for collaboration, partnership, and invaluable advice. SCORE facilitated many of these connections, and I am grateful for the community of support that has grown around my business.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the future and the growth potential of my business. With the foundation that my mentors have helped me establish, I am confident that I can navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

In conclusion, my journey with SCORE has been transformative. The knowledge, support, and mentorship I've received have been instrumental in getting my business off the ground.

For anyone considering starting a business, I cannot recommend enough the value of having a mentor to guide you through the process.
