Desserts Out The Jar And More, Yashica McKinney
Yashica McKinney started her desserts business in November 2014 as a hobby and source of supplemental income. Desserts Out The Jar And More, specializing in individually crafted, homestyle desserts packaged in mason jars, has since moved into a commercial kitchen and office. The company currently offers more than 30 flavors of cakes, pies, and puddings.
McKinney has recently been honored with numerous awards, including the 2017 Saint Louis American Young Leaders Award, 2017 Phenomenal Woman Award, and 2017 Emerald Small Business Award.
“I would highly recommend a SCORE mentor because they are equipped to guide you through the process and great resources,” McKinney says.
Desserts Out The Jar And More was named Outstanding American Manufacturer Small Business at the 2017 SCORE Awards.
McKinney connected with a mentor in Desserts Out The Jar And More’s early days, seeking validation for her business idea.
“I sought a SCORE mentor because I was unsure of how to start my business or if the idea was worthy to become a profitable endeavor,” McKinney says.
McKinney started meeting with mentor Gregory Shapiro every two months to work on marketing, sales, and branding.
“My mentor gave me the truth concerning starting my business and motivated me through the process to continue during my lows as well as my high points,” she says.
