My successes.

Winning the Big Pitch event at Anne Arundel Community College and prize money, which then allowed us to convert to a fixed-location training center.

What do you do?

We are a hands-on physical fitness club with a holistic approach; we provide personal training services that emphasize mental well-being through physical fitness.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always been physically fit and felt that becoming a personal trainer was a way to help people feel better, increase their confidence, and reduce their stress.

In 2021, my wife Cheryl and I started Enroute Personal Training as a mobile business where we provided fitness training at a client’s home. The mobile nature of our business model severely limited the number of daily appointments we could schedule and thus significantly limited our revenue potential. While attending business classes at the Anne Arundel Community College, I learned about SCORE’s mentoring services and started working with Carson Zake. Between my coursework and Carson, I was motivated to compete in the college’s Big Pitch competition, a “Shark Tank” like competition in 2022, and I won the $10,000 grand prize!  This money enabled us to take our business from mobile to a modern physical location, which resulted in a five-fold growth in our business revenue in 3 months.

What's special about your business?

Our motto is “nobody left behind” which means we train people of all ages and abilities.  We serve a diverse group from ages 8 to 93 and everyday people to ballerinas and martial arts enthusiasts. We touch on areas beyond strength and conditioning such as nutrition education, self-defense, and youth sport readiness.

What is your relationship with SCORE? SCORE client What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

We knew a lot about physical fitness but needed help running a business, including how to write a business plan.

How SCORE helped.

SCORE made the difference in our preparation leading up to the Big Pitch contest which we won. Though we had not intended to open a fixed location for our services, winning the prize money gave us the impetus to convert to a fully equipped, modern training center.

What's great about my mentor?

Carson was able to mesh with our busy schedule. He was direct and to the point during the writing of our business plan and prepping for the Big Pitch presentation and gave us a clear understanding of business phrases that enhanced our presentation. We communicated very effectively with Carson through the use of voice messages, email, and Zoom

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Don’t be afraid. Believe in what you do.  Nervousness about starting a business is not a reason for non-action, but rather an indicator that you are in an “all hands on deck” mode for something significant.

My Challenges

The mobile nature of our business model severely limited the number of daily appointments we could schedule and thus significantly limited our revenue potential.
