What do you do?

Meta Massage & Bodywork is a center for healing. We offer traditional Western massage along with Eastern modalities like GuaSha and cupping. Owners Kate Fitzpatrick and Bree Malueg, are both medical professionals who find massage therapy to be an extension of healthcare and a meeting point for self-care. We both have the experience that helps us speak the language of Western medicine while being able to focus wholly on our client's unique needs.

What inspired you to start your business?

Kate and I connected in massage therapy school, and our goals with massage therapy seemed to align perfectly. Our backgrounds enable us to be more holistic in our massage treatment and we believed that a partnership would be the best way to share our talents.

What's special about your business?

Both owners are educated beyond what is required of a massage therapist. The two of us hold higher education degrees, massage therapy licenses, and additional licenses and certifications in the bodywork field. We are also both instructors of Western medicine and East-West Healing Arts Institute, where we both received our massage therapy education.

What have been the high and low points of being a business owner?

Our clients are appreciative and are often repeat customers, and that is the biggest success for us. The most difficult parts are the back office things that don't make sense. I've never been more confused looking at a spreadsheet in my life!

What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

When we were first planning out our business, we would ask questions that neither of us had the answer to. After googling question after question and trying to make sense of everything, SCORE came up as a resource and it was a no-brainer.

How SCORE helped.

SCORE Madison mentor Gregg Schieve has answered all of our questions and has helped us be confident in our decisions. He often points us in the right direction and has helped us be efficient and perceptive in our planning and execution.

What's great about my mentor?

Gregg has been AMAZING. He guides us, encourages us, and reassures us. He gives us "homework" that helps us reach our business goals and asks important and meaningful questions that we never would have thought of on our own. When Kate and I meet and can't figure something out, we say "Gregg will help us with that" and we move it aside until we can ask his advice. We could not be more appreciative.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Get a mentor. Think before you act. And don't forget that it will all be worth it.

What have you learned from your experiences as a business owner?

Being a business owner is one of the hardest things I've done, but also one of the most rewarding.
