My successes.

I had been baking practically my whole life. When my wife, Bola, and I were getting married in 2017, I asked to make our three-tier wedding cake. It took time for Bola to get behind the idea, but she eventually did - and our guests loved the cake!  We officially launched Wani Cakes, LLC in 2021 and began selling ready-to-eat cake kits at farmer’s markets in 2022.

What do you do?

Wani Cakes’ cake kits feature a Nigerian cake base, which is light, having a buttery vanilla flavor, but not too sweet. In addition to cake, kits include either berries or nuts, as well as Wani’s signature cream.

What inspired you to start your business?

Seeing how much our wedding guests enjoyed the cake made me realize we needed to make these cakes for other people to enjoy.

What's special about your business?

We offer a unique twist on traditional cake by providing customers with kits that can be customized with berries or nuts. In addition, our kits are healthier than traditional cakes.

What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

I needed help selling my cakes in stores.

How SCORE helped.

Provided guidance on expanding from farmers markets to stores; also helped with pitch for the pitch competition.

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

The exposure to say that our product is being recognized that was really, really good. It has helped us to think outside the box, analyze our business as a whole.
