Cambridge and Co. PLLC, Ahmad El-Bkaily
My leap into entrepreneurship was partly pushed by necessity, but mostly by a desire to do more meaningful work. I was working in-house as an IP counsel for 5-Hour ENERGY, but when they lost their rights to publish Sports Illustrated, my specialized role as an AI attorney vanished. The job market was tough, but it gave me the exact push I needed to start my own firm, Cambridge and Co. PLLC. I realized I’d much rather spend my time holding the hands of small tech innovators—translating complex IP concepts into strategies that actually make sense for their businesses. It’s less profitable than working with corporate giants, but infinitely more emotionally satisfying.
Starting out on my own was daunting, but whenever I asked my network for advice, SCORE was the number one recommendation. I connected with my mentor, Matthew Vorce, and he was exactly what I needed. He stepped in as a de facto board of directors, keeping me focused as I navigated the chaos of launching a legal practice. He helped me build a solid foundation so I could focus on what I do best: helping founders bridge the gap between complex innovation and aggressive legal protection.
The best part about SCORE is how their support evolved right alongside my business. Once the firm was up and running, my focus shifted to getting my name out there. Matthew connected me with Kenya Wiedemann, who gave me an incredible opportunity to host educational seminars for fellow small business owners, focusing heavily on IP and AI. Today, I'm not just running a successful firm; I'm actively giving back to the community that helped me get my start.
At Cambridge and Co. PLLC, I provide engineering-grade legal counsel specifically tailored for high-growth tech startups and solo innovators. My core services focus on patent protection—especially for software and AI—along with trademark strategy and general counsel services for early-stage companies. What really sets me apart in this industry is that I'm an electrical engineer who became a patent attorney. Most IP firms have to outsource technical understanding, but for me, it's the foundation of my practice. Whether a founder is building a new AI model or a complex mobility system, I speak their language and understand their architecture without needing a translator.
I want people to know that securing world-class IP protection doesn't have to be an intimidating, overly corporate process. I bring the rigor I learned as a former USPTO patent examiner and big-firm attorney, but I run my practice with the agility of the startups I serve—which means ditching bloated billable hours for focused, flat-fee strategies. My real passion is sitting down with founders to translate complex legal concepts into plain English, helping them build an IP portfolio that actually survives investor due diligence and gets them from their first provisional filing all the way to Series A.
A sudden shift in my corporate role served as the catalyst to found Cambridge and Co. PLLC , allowing me to pursue my true passion of providing engineering-grade legal counsel and hands-on intellectual property strategy to early-stage technical founders.
What truly sets my firm apart is my rare dual-literacy as both an electrical engineer and an experienced patent attorney, which allows me to completely understand my clients' complex technology without a translator and provide them with agile, flat-fee IP protection.
I reached out to SCORE because they were universally recommended by my professional network as the premier resource for gaining the foundational mentorship I needed to successfully launch my own legal practice.
My mentor, Matthew Vorce, has been invaluable by acting as a de facto board of directors to oversee the launch and maintenance of my firm, and by connecting me with Kenya Wiedemann to expand my community impact through educational seminars.
My advice is to operate with the agility of the clients you serve, ditching bloated corporate conventions like billable hours to focus on the deeply rewarding work of directly guiding innovators through their complex challenges.
My biggest piece of advice is to engage with SCORE as early as possible, because their mentors don't just help you launch; they act as a dedicated board of directors whose guidance and resources will evolve right alongside the growing needs of your business.
