What do you do?

I started Boho Luxe Detroit during the height of COVID. After working at MGM Grand for 11 years, I was laid off. Like many people at that time, I was searching for a new path. A close friend in Maryland encouraged me to join Paparazzi, selling $5 jewelry. At first, it was fun—I went live on Facebook and started to sell. But I quickly realized that wasn’t enough. I wanted to connect with people face to face.

I began setting up at pop-up shops around Detroit and even at my gym, where the manager gave me permission to sell jewelry. I figured I had nothing to lose—I had product and needed to sell it. People loved the jewelry, but something interesting happened: they started asking for crystals—Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and more.

The demands of Paparazzi became overwhelming, and it got harder to keep up. That’s when I decided to let it go and listen to what my customers were asking for. They wanted crystals, and I was ready to deliver.

By 2022, MGM called me back to work, but I knew my heart was no longer there. I loved creating, selling, and sharing energy through crystals. So I began making my own crystal wire-wrapped jewelry and sold it at pop-ups across Metro Detroit.

That same year, I enrolled in TechTown’s Retail Bootcamp, and after completing it, I was given the opportunity to host a pop-up shop inside the historic Fisher Building for over six months. That experience gave my business visibility, momentum, and a sense of purpose.

Now, in 2025, I am proud to be part of the Motor City Match program, doing art shows, events, and continuing to grow Boho Luxe Detroit. I am grateful for my mentor, Mathew Vorce, who has guided me and helped me elevate my business to new levels.

What inspired you to start your business?

Boho Luxe Detroit was born during a time of uncertainty and change. When I was laid off from MGM after 11 years during COVID, I needed to find a new path. I started out selling $5 jewelry, but along the way I discovered something deeper—my customers were searching for crystals, intention, and meaning in the pieces they wore.

That inspired me to move away from mass-produced items and start creating handmade crystal jewelry and self-care products that carried energy, purpose, and healing. I wanted to give people more than accessories—I wanted to offer them tools for self-love, grounding, and empowerment.

What began as a way to make ends meet turned into a passion for helping others connect to their own energy, embrace self-care, and find beauty with intention. That’s the heart of Boho Luxe Detroit.

As my business began to grow beyond pop-ups and small shows, I realized I needed more than just creativity and passion — I needed guidance on the business side. I was creating beautiful products, but I wanted to build a strong foundation so Boho Luxe Detroit could become sustainable and scalable.

That’s what influenced me to reach out to SCORE. I knew mentorship could help me with structure, strategy, and planning — areas where I wanted to grow as an entrepreneur. Having access to experienced mentors has allowed me to get advice, new perspectives, and resources that are helping me take my business to the next level.

One of the main areas I wanted to focus on in my business was driving more traffic to my website. With Matt’s patience and guidance, I learned strategies to reach more people online. When we started, I had zero sales coming through my website — now I’m proud to say I’ve begun making sales directly online. This growth has given me the confidence to keep building and expanding Boho Luxe Detroit.

Through my work with SCORE and my mentor, I’ve achieved several important milestones in my business:

• Increased Online Sales – I went from having zero sales on my website to making consistent sales online.
• Better Business Strategy – I now have a clearer plan for growth, marketing, and connecting with my customers.
• Confidence & Support – With my mentor’s guidance, I feel more prepared to take on challenges and scale my business.
• Access to Resources – SCORE connected me with tools, knowledge, and opportunities I wouldn’t have had on my own.

Overall, SCORE has helped me strengthen the foundation of Boho Luxe Detroit so I can continue to grow and reach more people.

My mentor, Matt Vorce, has been an incredible influence on my journey. He is patient, takes the time to really listen, and offers thoughtful advice that meets me where I am as a business owner. Matt also connects me with the resources and guidance I need to take Boho Luxe Detroit to the next level. His support has helped me grow with confidence and clarity.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Follow your passion, but also be willing to learn, adapt, and ask for help. Success doesn’t happen overnight—it comes from patience, persistence, and staying true to your vision. Surround yourself with mentors, listen to guidance, and take small, consistent steps every day. Trust yourself, trust the process, and never be afraid to pivot when the opportunity calls.

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

If you’re serious about growing your business, don’t be afraid to reach out to SCORE. Be open, ask questions, and really use the resources and mentorship they offer. The guidance you receive can save you time, help you avoid mistakes, and give you the clarity you need to move forward with confidence. Having a mentor who listens and shares knowledge is like having a roadmap for your business.
