How SCORE helped.

What is your business and what was your motivation for starting it?

easyXAFS was founded in 2015 as a University of Washington spin-off to improve R&D in the energy and environment sectors by providing for the first time on-demand, simplified access to advanced x-ray methods. The company designs, manufactures, and sells X-ray spectrometers that are capable of probing materials and chemicals at the atomic level. These products have broad applicability in the fields of electrical energy storage, catalysis, and radiochemistry to name a few.

How is your business going and what does the future look like for your business?

easyXAFS LLC increased revenues from $928k in 2020 to $4.9m in 2021, doubled production capacity, and currently has a backlog of orders.  The company is on track to attain $6.4m in sales this year.

When did you first reach out to SCORE and why?

The first outreach in SCORE was in July 2021 to help make the transition from addressing a primarily academic customer base to understanding and meeting the largely industrial market. Part of this effort involved establishing a dedicated marketing and sales organization within the company.

How long have you been working with your mentor?

Since July 2021, there have been 10 mentoring meetings, including sessions with the entire senior management team.

How has your mentor and SCORE helped you and your business?

Our mentor’s experience and expertise have been critical in establishing a game plan to address the larger industrial market. A large part of this has been working to build a dedicated sales and marketing team. Those responsibilities were previously held by the founding members who all come from a science background. Additionally, our mentor has helped us create a program of marketing discovery and pipeline building in the industrial market.

How has SCORE helped you grow your business?

Being paired with a business mentor has been very helpful. As mentioned previously, the founding team are all scientists and this has been our first foray into the world of entrepreneurship. We are currently facing an important growth phase and the ability to talk to a mentor with real-world experience, who isn’t caught up in the day-to-day running of the company and can therefore provide a big-picture perspective, has been incredibly valuable.

Can you give us one or two short narratives about how your relationship with SCORE helped your business? Ex: An important success, connection, revenue growth, etc.’

Our previous communication with industrial customers was sporadic and unfocused. With our mentor’s help, we were able to create a game plan with clear, measurable steps toward progress. Even over a short time, this has paid great dividends. We recently had our first on-site visit from an industrial customer from a major, global petrochemical company. With our mentor’s help, we planned an effective visit that led to great conversation and continued interest.

What would you tell others who want to start or grow their business about SCORE and its services? What is/was your favorite part of working with SCORE?

If you are starting or trying to grow your business, you should absolutely work with SCORE. Seriously, what’s better than free help from a network of business experts who have experienced the challenges you face
