The Client:

In 2011, resume writer Marni Vyn started Chosen Resumes LLC, which writes resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles and executive bios to help clients land their dream jobs. Vyn’s initial clients were friends and acquaintances, but as word of mouth quickly spread, she realized Chosen Resumes had great potential for growth.

The Challenge:

In 2011, resume writer Marni Vyn started Chosen Resumes LLC, which writes resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles and executive bios to help clients land their dream jobs. Vyn’s initial clients were friends and acquaintances, but as word of mouth quickly spread, she realized Chosen Resumes had great potential for growth.

The Solution:

As a one-person business, time management was an issue for Vyn. “Balancing time is [important]--if I spend all my time writing, I’m not spending any time marketing and following up,” she explains. “Doug helped me to think strategically and be proactive. He helped me to define my goals and improve my focus to achieve them.”

Singer encouraged Vyn to be more selective about her clientele, hone her sales strategy and adjust her pricing so she could increase profitability and spend more time working toward bigger goals. “He also provided me with tools like an innovative business plan format and spreadsheet templates to help me be more effective,” she says. Last but not least, Singer introduced her to connections, such as a local career coach, who could provide valuable services to grow the business.

The Results:

Since working with SCORE, Vyn has become certified as a Professional Résumé Writer and has increased her clientele by 30 percent annually. She’s on track to meet 2014 sales goals, and is considering adding services such as career counseling and interview training to provide clients with a holistic approach to their career search.

Vyn still meets with Singer quarterly. Currently, he’s advising her on building relationships with potential partners such as local career coaches, recruiters and search groups. Says Vyn, “Doug’s support and guidance have provided me with the confidence I need to grow as a business owner.”
