Launched in 2004, Integrated Marketing Werx is a marketing firm that uses proven techniques to understand what drives a business, identify and understand its markets, then target communications to customers who want and need the business’s products and services. Clients gain the services of teams of experts, data-driven tactics and up-to-the-minute technology for less than the cost of hiring one in-house marketing employee.
In 2011, Integrated Marketing Werx founder Kathy Swanson knew the recession was ending and corporations were ready to spend on marketing again. To grab her share of those clients, she needed to rejuvenate her customer base and reposition her business. “I needed the assistance of others to take my game to the next level,” says Swanson.
SCORE mentor Dr. David Palmer helped Swanson determine the best places to find decision-makers and influencers in her target market. “My business is [grown via] word-of-mouth and referral, so it’s important I talk to the right people,” she explains. “David helped me identify and connect with decision-makers.”
Palmer encouraged Swanson to begin public speaking, which exposed Integrated Marketing Werx’s services to executives at organizations such as downtown San Antonio’s Rotary club, the second-largest in the world.
“David also helped me further refine and hone how I talk with decision-makers,” Swanson says. “The core is understanding what their need is and where they’re coming from. Often they’ve been disappointed [by marketing firms] and are skeptical. I show them that my team and I talk the language of finance, operations, legal and technology as well as customer service and sales. We understand what their vision is and can quickly take it to the tactical [level].”
Business has increased “more than fourfold” since Swanson began working with SCORE; Integrated Marketing Werx now has a waiting list of clients. In 2013, Swanson was nominated for the National Association of Women Business Owners’ Entrepreneurial Spirit Award for innovation.
Though Palmer has since retired from SCORE, he and Swanson stay in touch. “David encouraged me that even though I was blazing a trail, I was on the right track. Now, it’s paying off.”
