We all know the type: The man or woman who can inspire, motivate and get the best work out of people. The boss people want to work for and do good work for. In my previous role as a manager and my current role as a business owner, I still take pride in my ability to be an effective leader. But I also know it’s a constant challenge. Here are three ways to be a great leader:

Be a role model. I’ve always believed that I can’t ask any one of my employees to do something I’m not willing to do myself. Lead by example and be a role model in your business. If your social and leadership skills are lacking, how will your employees know what’s expected of them? You set the bar, so set it high. Communicate your personal integrity and values every day.
Go, team! Team leaders encourage and educate to bring out the best in each worker—from your top manager to your office intern. You are responsible for the success of your team. Keep an eye out for signs of leadership skills in your employees, then nurture those skills so you have a strong “bench.”
Get involved. Customers today expect business owners to be accessible and communicative. Make sure you are establishing relationships with your customers through tools like e-newsletters, social media and online surveys. Ask what your customers like and don’t like about your business and be quick to respond. Get out and about in your community, speaking at local events and volunteer your time for charity. Get involved in industry organizations and events, too. Soon, you’ll be a leader not only in your business, but in your community and industry as well. 
As business expert Peter Drucker said, “Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.”
