In Websites 101, we talked about the importance of creating a unique website for your small business. This is your one-of-a-kind identity on the Web, the center of gravity for the various elements that make up your online presence -- including social media profiles, reviews and directories.

And it’s never been easier to get a website up and running.

A few years ago, the thought of building your own website was daunting and it was easier to offload that task to someone else,” says Sandeep Grover, GoDaddy’s head of site building products. “However, with the advancement in technology, there are a lot of tools out there that make basic website building as easy as writing an email.”

Sandeep talks more about the benefits of building your own website, and gives some tips for getting started, in this blog post. But what happens after you’ve got a beautiful new website for your small business?

Let’s ask Sandeep…

Q: I got a website up. What do I do next?

A: Congrats. Getting your website up and running is a great deal. However, equally important now is to make sure that your website is getting found. There are hundreds of millions of websites out there, and you want to make sure that your business is visible when people are searching for certain keywords on Google®, Yelp!® or Foursquare®.

Like Web design advancements, search engine optimization (SEO) techniques also keep on changing as search engines like Google change their search algorithms frequently. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to worry about those changes. If you chose a site builder that includes an easy-to-use SEO tool, all that work will be done for you in the background.

Instead, you can focus on:

Keeping your site fresh. Continue to tweak the content on your site to make your brand shine online. Make sure you are updating and refreshing your site with the latest content and images.

Connecting your social presence. Your business has a website, a Yelp! page, a Facebook® page, and probably other social media pages as well. You want to discretely tie these social platforms to your website so visitors (i.e. customers and potential customers) get one unified view of your business. For example, you can showcase your Yelp reviews on your website, or have your Facebook page automatically update as soon as you update your site.

Q: How difficult is it for a website owner to keep up with current trends?

A: We live in an extremely dynamic world where technologies and trends change quite rapidly. The bad news is that as a small business owner, it can be overwhelming to keep pace with these ever-changing trends. The good news is that you shouldn’t have to worry about it!

For example, take flash. Barely few years ago, having flash on your website seemed to be the trend. Now, flash is rarely seen on the most modern websites as it doesn’t play nice with most smartphones. Unless you read a lot of tech blogs or magazines, you’re probably not going to have much insight into the trends.

That’s where choosing the right website building provider comes in handy. A good provider will not only suggest that your website is out of date but will also recommend the new, modern templates you should be using to keep pace with the latest trends.

Q: So, what’s a hot trend today?

A: The current trend is to have a simple and minimalistic Web design. Most modern site builders come stocked with these modern Web design templates so your job should be to just upload your own content.

Q: The site looks good and it’s getting some traffic. What next?

A: Getting visitors to your site is like having people passing by your physical storefront. The next challenge is to get them interested enough to walk in the door and learn more about your business. Make sure to have all the relevant information on your site -- your primary contact information should be on every page. Entice them to sign up for a newsletter, or offer incentives that encourage them to leave their contact information with you.

Overall, keep trying new ways to engage with customers online. Building and maintaining a strong website is a big part of the journey -- a journey that, if done right, can really help you get new customers and grow your business.
