Social media can feel like a moving target. Trends shift, algorithms change and everyone seems to have a quick tip for everything. But social media becomes a powerful growth tool when you have a strategy and know exactly where to focus. This article will help you choose the right platforms, build content that converts, and track what actually drives revenue.

Every post should move customers from awareness to action, so you can build trust and drive sales. But many businesses make the mistake of being active everywhere. An over-distributed presence isn’t a strategy - it’s a distraction.

Smart businesses simplify. Focus on platforms where your audience spends time and post content with purpose. That’s where growth begins.

Step 1: Choose Your Platforms Wisely

Not every platform deserves your attention. Show up where your audience already spends time and where your preferred content format naturally excels.

Try using these AI prompts to identify your ideal platforms. While AI may not have all the answers, it can save you time by guiding you in the right direction. Always remember to verify the information and do research to gain deeper insights.

Prompt 1: "I am [business name]. I offer [your product/service] for [target audience]. You are my social media strategist. Which platforms are my most likely customers actively using, and why?"

Prompt 2: "List 10 competitors—both direct competitors and alternative solutions my customers might choose. For each, identify what's working in their social strategy and why it resonates with our shared audience."

Social Media Platform Guide:

  • Instagram: Visual products, tips and hacks, lifestyle brands and behind-the-scenes content
  • LinkedIn: B2B services, professional expertise and thought leadership
  • TikTok: Educational content, creative storytelling, this audience values quick solutions and entertainment
  • Facebook: Local businesses, community building and event promotion
  • YouTube: Tutorials, demonstrations and long-form educational content

Pro tip:

Master one platform before adding another.
Consistency beats coverage.

Step 2: Build Out Your Content Machine

Posting without purpose is the fastest way to waste time and effort. Build a system around categories that align with your goals, called content buckets:

  • Education: Answer your customers' most frequently asked questions.

  • Behind-the-scenes: Show your process, team and personality.
  • Social proof: Share testimonials, case studies and success stories.
  • Promotion: Present your offers with clear value and strong calls-to-action.

We recommend a mix of 40% education, 30% behind-the-scenes, 20% social proof and 10% promotion.

If you’re a chef, your social media strategy might look like this:

  • Education: "Three knife techniques that cut prep time in half"
  • Behind-the-scenes: Time-lapse videos of meal preparation
  • Social proof: Customer reactions to signature dishes
  • Promotion: "Book your private dinner experience—comment 'CHEF' for details"

Pro tip:

Ask AI to generate a list of your audience's most frequently asked question
about your product or service. Then answer one question per post—these become your
educational content bucket and provide immediate value to potential customers.

Step 3: Focus on Metrics That Drive Revenue

People clicking “like” on your content might boost your ego, but it doesn’t do much for your bottom line.

The metrics that matter indicate buying intent and business impact:

  • Saves: Content valuable enough to reference later
  • Shares: Content compelling enough to recommend
  • Website clicks: Direct traffic to your sales pages
  • DM inquiries: Conversations that lead to sales
  • Email signups: Growing your owned audience

Weekly actions you can take to improve metrics may include:

  • Analyze last week's top-performing content
  • Create similar content with slight variations
  • Engage authentically with your target audience's content
  • Share behind-the-scenes content to build connection
  • Post promotional content with clear next steps

Pro tip:

Use Instagram companion apps like ManyChat to automate responses to CTAs.
These tools automatically deliver your lead magnets, turning engagement into email
subscribers so you have direct access to those most interested in your offer.

The Advantage of a Social Media Strategy

Social media algorithms reward consistency and genuine value. When your audience regularly engages with purposeful content, platforms increase your visibility - creating a compound effect that grows your reach and revenue simultaneously.

So, what are your next actions?

  1. This week: Choose your primary platform using the AI prompts above.
  2. Next week: Create content for each of your four buckets.
  3. Month 1: Post consistently and track revenue-driving metrics.
  4. Month 2: Double down on your highest-converting content formats.

Social media success isn’t about posting more. It’s about posting with purpose.
