In today’s marketplace, every scroll or swipe seems to reveal a new AI tool, marketing app or “must-try” tactic. As business owners, especially those wearing multiple hats, the pressure to keep up can feel overwhelming.

We get it. We’ve been at this since the early 2000s - back when MySpace was still a major platform and social media strategy just looked like cool graphics and catchy taglines. But even back then, we understood one simple truth that still holds up today:

The Tools May Change, but Psychology Doesn’t

Learning how people connect, what captures their attention and what compels them to act - is still what guides our strategy today. We used that insight to build our six-year-old daughter’s brand into a powerhouse that partnered with names like McDonald’s, MTV, The Obamas, Smithsonian and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.

This article will walk you through how to work smarter, build stronger connections with your audience and grow faster - without burning out or breaking the bank.

1. Work Smarter With AI for Automation and Personalization

AI is not about replacing your creativity. It’s about amplifying it. One of the best use cases for AI is being able to understand more of your customers at a deeper level.

Try this prompt in ChatGPT or Gemini:

“What are common objections or concerns for someone considering [insert your product/service]?”

Then, take that insight and turn it into a blog post, a Reel script and video or a series of Instagram Stories.

Example: A men’s skincare brand found itself stuck. AI allowed them to tailor messaging based on customers’ most likely challenges and desires. The adjustments made from those AI insights increased conversion by over 200% over four months.

You can also use AI to identify buying patterns and schedule promotions based on actual behavior. Tools like Mailchimp, ManyChat and Kajabi can automate follow-ups, personalize email flows, and even provide customer service while you sleep.

2. People Crave Connection, So Make It Personal

People don’t want to be sold to anymore. They want to feel seen, heard and understood.

This “connection economy” is where personalization shines and may look like:

  • Recommending products based on past purchases.
  • Segmenting your audience with communications that reflect where the customer is in their journey.
  • Using quizzes or surveys to create customized offers and experiences.

The more personal you can make your marketing, the more likely your audience is to trust, and buy, from you.

3. Boost Your Brand With Micro-influencers

Not every brand needs a celebrity spokesperson. In fact, micro-influencers (with 10K–100K followers) often bring more engaged, niche audiences—and more authentic results.

Try using AI to identify influencers aligned with your brand voice and values with this prompt:

“List ten micro-influencers with 10,000 to 100,000 followers in [insert your industry/location] who align with my brand and have high engagement.”

Start relationships. You can co-create content, share discount codes or build affiliate programs. Just make sure they speak in their own voice and it feels natural and aligned — authenticity always wins.

4. Video is Essential

Your website tells people who you are. Your video shows them.

A short, well-lit video of you explaining your mission, showing off your product, or offering value-packed tips, builds more trust than a static “About” page could ever dream of.

Try intuitive tools like VLLO, CapCut, and Canva’s video editor. If video is new or intimidating for you, start with short-form - a 30-second tip or a voiceover product demo.

Remember:

Don't try to do everything,
do the important things consistently.

Trends come and go, but staying informed and intentional is how small businesses stay ahead. Marketing is less about shouting louder and more about resonating more deeply with more people.
