Gold Standard Cleaning Services LLC, Alec McDeavitt
When Alec McDeavitt decided to turn his college experience managing sanitation into a commercial cleaning business, he knew he needed guidance. Fortunately, his former roommate Jordan Grady, now president of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, connected him with the perfect mentor: Russell Hearn at SCORE.
“I always come with some crazy ideas, and he always tells me whether it's doable or not,” Alec said about his relationship with Russ.
That guidance proved invaluable as Alec launched Gold Standard Cleaning Services LLC, which focuses on recurring after-hours cleaning for businesses in Allegheny and Butler counties. The cleaning company also offers post-construction and renovation cleaning services for contractors and builders. The company has just completed its successful first year in operation.
Before launching, Alec contacted SCORE for help with business planning. “Once I created the business, he helped guide me.” His biggest challenges weren't related to the cleaning work. They were the behind-the-scenes complexities of business formation, including taxes and insurance. “All those building blocks that go into building a business that I didn't fully understand, I relied on SCORE for assistance.”
Starting the business while working full-time as a project manager for another company presented additional hurdles. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That company closed its doors just as Alec’s new cleaning service was gaining ground. Throughout the early stages, Alec maintained weekly calls to Russ to stay on track.
One year in, the strategy is paying off. “The biggest part of starting up is getting your name out there and getting new leads,” Alec said. He's now building a base of regular clients and benefiting from referrals, while staying in regular contact with Russ to discuss his progress.
But Alec isn't stopping there. He's already in the early stages of launching his second venture: Accessible Housing Solutions LLC. Working with his fiancé, who is an occupational therapist, they plan to buy and rehabilitate properties to make them more accessible. “Individuals in that space have a hard time finding that housing, so we're going to provide housing that’s move-in ready and meets their needs.”
Currently in the fundraising stage, Alec is again turning to SCORE for guidance on creative financing options and potential business partnerships. His first entrepreneurial experience has given him more confidence and better time management skills for this second venture.
For other aspiring entrepreneurs, Alec's advice is clear. “Reaching out to SCORE puts you on the fast track to turn your idea into a business entity. Doing it solo is time-consuming, and you can make a lot of mistakes that slow down the process. They give you great advice and can answer any questions you may have along the way.”
