With each passing news cycle, it can feel like we’re spiraling further into economic uncertainty. At the same time, we live in one of the most resource-rich, opportunity-filled periods in human history. So how does a business owner cut through the conflicting noise and chart a confident, forward-looking course?

One of the most common questions business owners face—while trying to tune out the doom-and-gloom of the media—is whether or not it’s the right time to expand. Expansion can take many forms: launching a new product or service, acquiring another business, entering a new market, or simply capturing more value from existing customers.

There’s no shortage of books, case studies, and consultants to support these strategies. But ultimately, any expansion effort should be grounded in solid data and thoughtful market research. That research could be as straightforward as understanding your profitability and cash flow—or as complex as identifying saturation points in niche customer segments. It might involve simply listening to your existing customers or building a full-scale revenue model for an untapped market.

In uncertain times, it’s easy to default to caution and conclude that “now just isn’t a good time.” But often, the real opportunity lies in taking stock of the resources available to you—resources that provide clarity rather than confusion.

Talk to your accountant. Lean on your financial advisor. Yes, even call your banker. You can also tap into free resources like your local SCORE mentor or the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC). These seasoned professionals can help you sift through the noise and make informed decisions tailored to your unique business.

In times like these, clarity doesn’t come from the headlines—it comes from trusted relationships, smart questions, and actionable insight.
