What do you do?

PuretopiahTM is a vegan, ultra-gentle, hypoallergenic, handmade haircare brand that works especially well for kids with sensitive skin and eczema. Puretopiah’s “Curls 4 Days” wash-and-go system is the first plant-powered solution to give kids up to 4 days of moisture and curl definition without satin/silk accessories. Our game-changing product line consists of a shampoo, conditioner, detangler, and curling cream.

What inspired you to start your business?

Puretopiah was born out of my struggle as a first-time mom to find safe, gentle, natural hair care products for my daughter “Baby M” who has thick multi-textured curls and ultra-sensitive skin. My journey was particularly difficult because Baby M’s skin was so delicate it would react to a drop of ice cream. I was so overwhelmed one day, that I broke down and started venting to my brother Jason - a chemist for over 12 years, and he said he could make something that was natural, gentle, safe, and would alleviate all my struggles. Guess What? He did! Puretopiah was officially launched on M’s birthday - November 3, 2021!

What is your relationship with SCORE? SCORE client What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

I needed expert help to launch my business in an industry I knew nothing about. I learned about SCORE through the SBDC website and realized there were a plethora of free resources available at my fingertips – numerous mentors with decades of experience, mentors with specialized areas of expertise (Legal, Accounting, Social Media, Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, etc.), training seminars, networking events, etc.

How SCORE helped.

Through assistance from SCORE, I went from a mere idea to successfully launching my business. I got assistance in identifying the type of business to register, determining my business name, securing my domain and social media handles, creating my logo and product labels, developing my marketing plan, determining pricing strategy, articulating my unique selling proposition, and ultimately successfully launching my business.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?
