Turning Hobbies Into Profits, With a Little Help - Elizabeth Olson

Increasing numbers of people of retirement age or nearing it are remaking a hobby, interest or passion into a money-producing enterprise. That includes Carla Ingram of Sarona, Wis., who is using her expertise as a seamstress to develop a business in weather-resistant porch shades and Donnetta Watson of Kansas City, Mo., who is turning her love of decorating and weddings into a wedding planning service and venue.

Ms. Watson has been working with a SCORE volunteer, Gary Brickman, a retired federal bank examiner. He said many aspiring small-business owners who turn to SCORE for start-up advice got cold feet once they learned of the financial commitments and requirements. But he said Ms. Watson “has a business plan prepared and probably will meet her goals.”
