SCORE Honors Older Americans for Assisting Local Businesses
Washington, D.C.—SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” honors SCORE’s volunteer experts for their work to help entrepreneurs live their dreams of business success. Last year, SCORE’s 10,500 counselors donated more than 1 million hours of service to support starting and growing businesses nationwide.
Retired executives join SCORE to share their wisdom from years of business experience. Increasingly, SCORE reflects the changing face of retirement for business men and women across the United States. Currently, 22 percent of all SCORE counselors either own a business or work as executives.
With diverse business backgrounds and decades of experience, SCORE volunteers provide reliable, free and confidential advice and low-cost workshops through 389 local offices. SCORE volunteers also enjoy a variety of personal rewards, including:
- Leadership in the business community
- Recognition and respect as a business mentor
- Professional and personal growth
- Lifelong learning opportunities
SCORE Board Chair Jim Pyles says, “Older Americans bring experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for giving back to the community. Through their service, both working and retired SCORE volunteers help keep our nation’s economy strong.”
Pyles adds, “As a retiree myself, I share my business skills to help entrepreneurs on their path to success. I also find SCORE to be an ongoing learning experience, keeping me up-to-date on an ever-changing business environment.”
Older Americans Month was established in 1963. It has historically been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to the United States. Older Americans Month is celebrated each May.
Since 1964, SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” has assisted more than 7.2 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through counseling and business workshops. More than 10,500 volunteer business counselors in 389 chapters serve their communities through entrepreneur education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses.
