About six years ago, when her business was just an idea and an experiment in her kitchen, Susan Martinson heard about SCORE.

Martinson was at a food and beverage expo, trying to learn more about the industry. She was thinking about starting a business that would make and sell flavored syrups that could be used by coffee shops, bars and restaurants.

But she wasn’t sure how to turn the idea into a business.

“I was paired with John Anderson, and I remember we met at Café Caturra,” Martinson said. “I brought six simple syrups with me for John to sample.”

Anderson is a volunteer with SCORE, a national organization of retired business executives who provide free coaching to small businesses, or to people thinking of starting a business.
