For Hispanics living in Chester County, obtaining basic services can sometimes be a challenge.

Statistics from the Chester County Department of Community Development paint a sobering picture:

• More than 15 percent of Hispanics in Chester County are below 100 percent of the poverty level, and nearly 40 percent are below 200 percent of the poverty level.

• More than 32 percent of Hispanics in Chester County are uninsured.

• More than 77 percent of Hispanics in Chester County are “linguistically isolated,” meaning they speak a language other than English at home. Nationwide, the rate is just above 19 percent.

Indeed, in southern Chester County, Hispanics have quite a presence. This area’s Hispanic population, currently estimated at more than 27,000, has increased nearly 30 percent in the past 12 years.
