It was 1978 and 22-year-old Valerie Gooding, an administrative clerk by day and professional dance instructor by night, knew it was time to move with the tempo of her class of ballet, tap, jazz and musical theater students and open the doors to her dream.
So, the Philadelphian, who has lived in Delaware since 1973 and now Newark, did just that.
Gooding owns New Castle Dance and Music Academy in People's Plaza in Glasgow. The business, like most small ventures launched by entrepreneurial spirits with big dreams, had a humbling beginning, in this case, in the back of a music store.
Today about 500 families are clients of the Gooding's family-run business where daughter Dana, 35, is the manager, Heather, 37, is the dance team director and mom, 57, is artistic director.
Gooding's success stretches beyond a lifetime of training, a master's degree in ballet arts and musical theater arts, the devotion and passion of her daughters, and even her own tenacity.
