Today at the Cedar Rapids City Council Meeting at 4:00 PM, Mayor Ron Corbett will issue a Proclamation, naming the month of November as "SCORE Month" in the City of Cedar Rapids. This Proclamation is the result of The Eastern Iowa Chapter of SCORE, being named Chapter of the Year in the US in 2011, and most recently for receiving a $ 20,000 grant from The Sam's Club Foundation.
Sam's Club recognized SCORE East Central Iowa, for their continued outstanding support of small businesses in the area which services Jones, Benton, Cedar and Linn Counties. The grant is a result of volunteer efforts by Sam's Club Associates during "Step Up For Small Business Week" in May of this year. Sam's Club associates donated hundreds of hours to celebrate small businesses nationwide. By utilizing skill-based volunteering, the Sam's Club associates were able to not only assist with day-to-day operations, but to also better understand their members, allowing Sam's Club additional opportunities to better serve local small businesses. This store was one of the top winning markets that then had the opportunity to give this award to the SCORE chapter in their market. 12 SCORE chapters in the US were recipients of awards. The award was presented by Cedar Rapids Club Manager, John Daming, in a ceremony September 6, 2012 at Sam's Club location.
Since 1964, SCORE "Mentors to America's Small Business" has helped more than 9 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through mentoring and business workshops. More than 13,000 volunteer business mentors in over 350 chapters serve their communities through entrepreneur education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses.
