Broward SCORE, the SBA, and AARP held the 4th Encore Entrepreneur Day at the Alvin Sherman Library of Nova Southeastern University yesterday.
The event was attended by close to 70 entrepreneurs. Aimed specifically at people 50+ years of age the symposium featured speakers with a wealth of knowledge on starting a business later in life.
SCORE Volunteers George Gremse, Nancy Leve, Joe Ewart, Paul Bosley, and Michal Bush recounted the paths they took from working in the corporate world to starting their own businesses in consulting, restaurants, internet marketing, travel, education, and tutoring. Ken Zempol and Angelica Valentine facilitated the event.
Information on funding a business was presented. The SBA’s Kim Prenter spoke about SBA funding programs; Rick Simpson & Golden Johannsen of Legacy Bank discussed the support from community banks; ACCION’s Vanessa Louchart explained micro loans; Michael Carn from MetroBroward Development Corporation enlightened attendees about community based lending. HBIF’s Ismael Cifuentes described the ethnic based that is available for new businesses.
The event is popular and is held twice a year. It is part of a nationwide effort to assist people looking to start a second career as an entrepreneur.
