Detailed Background and Experience
Following his graduation from Georgia Tech University, Tom was recruited by IBM to join their Atlanta team as a Systems Engineer/Systems Analyst. Two years later, he received a direct commission in the US Army and rose to Captain in the Office of the Surgeon General in Washington, DC. He was responsible for 14 Army Medical Department data processing installations and numerous R D projects.
After his discharge from the Army, Tom returned to IBM to lead a major sales account team. He was frequently recognized for achieving/exceeding his sales targets and was promoted to IBM Data Processing Division Headquarters to serve as the national product marketing representative for IBM;s Finance Industry. He was responsible for beta testing and nationwide marketing programs for High Speed MICR products, ATMs, POS and EFTS. He also served as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Finance Industry.
In 1977 Tom was promoted to Marketing Manager in Phoenix, AZ with responsibility for American Express and all Finance Industry major accounts in AZ. He was promoted to Business Unit Executive responsible for American Express Card and Travel Related Services nationwide as well as large multi state banks in the western US. Tom also managed units responsible for introducing IBM PC and RISC-based computers (UNIX) into the Arizona Marketplace. He later added marketing units responsible for business partners, software and services groups as IBM began its evolution from a product sales company to a services based organization. Tom retired from IBM after 30 years.
Tom continued on and led southwest US marketing for two computer-based companies, did some technical marketing consulting for smart card and software companies and later joined an entrepreneurial software company where he grew sales to over $1 million in one year. In addition to SCORE, Tom records text books for Learning Ally (formerly known as Arizona Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic). Tom is also a Lay Eucharistic Minister and Lay reader in the Episcopal Church. Tom is married and has two grown children with six grandchildren. Hobbies are golf and tennis. . .
