Although I am a new SCORE mentor (August 2018), 10 years ago I was, like you, a SCORE client who received support from my mentor on how to guide my small business through a few lean, start-up years. Once we got going, the small medical practice that I ran in Massachusetts was so successful that it led to other opportunities where I mentored and advised business best practices to many practice managers both locally and across the US.

I am originally from Needham, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb. I obtained my undergraduate degree in women's studies, sociology, and economics from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City in 1996. While still in college, I interned at Dan Klores & Associates, a leading public relations firm in New York City that specializes in the entertainment industry. There I honed my public relations skills while working with such high-profile clients as Woodstock ’94, the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, Jay Leno, and Howard Stern. After graduation I moved home to the Boston area and continued to work in public relations for several agencies that specialized in supporting high-tech clients. In 1999 I was hired to be the marketing communication manager for SupplierMarket.com, where I managed marketing activities from the first $8 million financing round to eventual $580 million acquisition by Ariba, Inc.

Life changed dramatically for me when I met and fell in love with a Tufts medical student who was also a Captain in the US Air Force. The Air Force paid for my husband’s medical education, so we spent the first six years of his career, and our marriage, as a military couple stationed first for three years at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and then for three years at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While living in Albuquerque, I obtained my MBA from the University of New Mexico so that my husband and I could fulfill our dream of opening a solo pediatric practice for him in our home state of Massachusetts when his military commitment ended in 2006.

We saw our first patient at Performance Pediatrics in Plymouth, Massachusetts on December 26, 2006. Although the startup years were challenging, by 2010 we met our financial goals and went on to enjoy several years where we greatly exceeded average revenue and income for pediatricians in the area. Due to our success, in 2013 I was asked to join, and I eventually chaired, a committee at Boston Children’s Hospital where I educated other practice managers on business best practices. Also, in 2013, I started publishing a monthly column for an industry publication called Physicians Practice. The popularity of that column lead to several local and national speaking engagements.

Although our practice continued to do well for several years, in the summer of 2017 I realized that the business future of our small practice was in jeopardy. My husband and I witnessed many friends and colleagues being forced by industry changes to abandon independent practices and become employed by large hospitals and group practices. In January 2018, we closed our practice on our terms and turned our closing into an opportunity for adventure. We have family who have lived in Las Vegas for some time and, when we took a close look, we realized that pediatricians earn as much in Las Vegas as they do in eastern Massachusetts, but with a much lower cost of living. After taking a month off to drive and explore the US with our son, we settled in Summerlin and my husband started working in March 2018 for Desert Valley Pediatrics.

One of the benefits of being a small business owner is that I could tailor my work hours to fit the needs of my family. My husband and I are adoptive parents to a beautiful, but complicated, teenage foster son who has been with us since he was 5 years old. As a SCORE mentor, I can continue to balance my passion for small business with my family’s needs all while helping other entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams and goals.
