How I can help you
For the immediate future, I am limiting my form of mentoring to be via Zoom video-conferencing. Once we set a date and time for a meeting, I will give you instructions for Zoom. If you prefer to meet with a mentor in person rather than via video, you can request another mentor by going to https://www.score.org/find-location/. You can get additional help by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and ask them for a referral to a SCORE chapter close to you.
NOTE: When requesting me as a mentor, please answer “Yes” if asked “Do you agree to meet in-person with John Beavers?" I am part of a test group where "In Person” includes both meeting face to face and via video conferencing. Please note the Caveat at the end of this Profile that I am not permitted to practice law, including drafting legal documents or giving legal advice, in my role as a SCORE mentor. But I can use my legal and management backgrounds to guide you through business issues. And there may be issues where I will advise that that you need your own lawyer and, if so, I will try to recommend how to find an appropriate lawyer.
I am a champion of John F. Kennedy’s gifting of the proceeds from his Pulitzer-Prize winning book, Profiles in Courage, to fund scholarships for those not having access to education because “a mind is a terrible thing to waste.” My passion in retirement is mentoring small-business owners, especially women and minorities who in the past may not have had access to mentors with my experience.
For over forty years, I practiced business law in areas of capital formation, mergers and acquisition and, for the last 20 years of my career, corporate governance. I have been recognized by The Best Lawyers of America in 2014 as the best Corporate Compliance Lawyer, in 2013 as the best Mergers & Acquisitions Lawyer, and in 2010 as the best Corporate Lawyer in Columbus, Ohio.
I also served 11 years as managing partner of one of the larger law firms in Ohio. As managing partner, I was recognized by the American Bar Association for support of women in the practice of law and recognized by the Martin Luther King Center of Columbus, Ohio as Outstanding Corporate Citizen.
Having served on SEC advisory committees, I also have experience with private offerings of securities for small businesses, including raising venture capital, early seed rounds and series "A" et al rounds.
For the last 20 years of my legal career, I became one of the leading counselors on the duties, role and functions of a non-profit and for-profit boards, their committees, and management, including working with all types of organizations in considering, executive compensation, strategic planning, succession planning, best practice evaluations, and building an “expertise” board (a board whose members are chosen based upon the expertise they have rather than, like Congress, the constituencies and contributors they represent).
I have also authored numerous articles on executive compensation, governance, board governance and operations, management, mergers and acquisitions, Sarbanes-Oxley, the Securities Exchange Commission, and other public disclosure and reporting published in Business First, a publication of American City Business Journals; Corporate Governance Report; Lexology; Corporate Board Member; and Directorship among others.
My preferred form of mentoring is face-to-face, either in person or via video conferencing. I mentor differently than other SCORE mentors because I give homework to my mentees to complete before our next session. As a result, I am one of the busier mentors nationally with clients from coast to coast as well as internationally.

Although law is my background, I am not permitted to practice law, including drafting legal documents or giving legal advice, in my role as a SCORE mentor. But I can use my legal and management backgrounds to guide you through business issues. And there may be issues where I will advise that that you need your own lawyer and, if so, I will try to recommend how to find an appropriate lawyer.
