As an established resident of mid-Florida with a strong background in helping large and small businesses develop successful marketing and communications strategies, I am prepared to deliver senior leadership advice and counsel to SCORE clients in initiating and building innovative programs in competitive environments. I have had extensive experience in higher education, market and advertising research, consumer durable goods, and telecommunications--providing expert guidance in market analysis, customer service, resource development and deployment, strategy implementation, budget planning, and cost management.
For the past 23 years, I served as director of marketing and communications for the College of Engineering, University of Iowa, overseeing areas of corporate relations, news relations, alumni relations, and government relations, as well as managing external communications for the college. I orchestrated marketing and communications processes to achieve a $31 million capital improvement goal in less than two years -- persuading state legislative, university, and private financial support, and initiated a “corporate concierge” program leading to new and expanded partnerships with more than 400 U.S. corporations and agencies, large and small. I also helped establish the first Technological Entrepreneurship Certificate in the U.S. for engineering students, and developed the Storer Engineering Student Entrepreneurial Start-up Awards program, engaging students to create innovative technological business ideas through effective business plans.
As partner and executive vice president for Prospect Management Associates, Inc., I conducted analyses of sales from first-time business customers to measure effectiveness of promotions and monthly return-on-advertising investments, and implemented programs that improved sales productivity and capitalized on business-to-business client investments, along with identifying and targeting new business for the firm.
As vice president of advertising and public relations for Amana Refrigeration, Inc., I developed advertising and public relations strategies for five major business segments, contributing toward 21% sales and 28% profit growth in four years in highly competitive markets – including major appliances, heating and air conditioning, commercial food service, international distribution, and service parts. I also maintained strong consumer brand awareness among competitors that had 4-10 times share of voice, and guided the company into emerging marketing technologies, such as prospect and current customer direct mail, cable TV, interactive media, and CD-ROM.
