How I can help you

In 1977 I started my woman owned business which started as a hobby of a few years. I was able to develop a niche in a unique field of collecting world-wide butterflies for collections and hobbies (dead specimens) and I was the first woman to enter my field. Within a few years I became the leader in this industry which is the position I maintain today. Back in the 70's it was critical to develop my own nitche and brand by name recognition and a good marketing style to stand out and excel in the competitive market place - dominated by men. In the early years I had no employees because I thought no one could ever do things like I wanted so I wore all the hats.

With coaching from my own SCORE mentors lots o my ideas changed, and the company grew steadily over the years ending with a staff of full time and part time employees and a dedicated associate manager. I remember advertising the hard way in those beginning years - mailing out black and white paper price lists to 80 customers in my original client data base. Then, in the 1990s the internet was born and I paniced not having any experience or knowledge of online marketing. It became necessary to learn fast! I became the pioneer a short time later and launched a website in e-commerce. At that time I designed the website myself and had it custom built to my specific way of marketing, and continually customized and updated it over the next 25+ years. That hard work resulted in my company and website becoming the premier destination for people seeking my product and it is still known to be the most user friendly ecommerce website in my field. My customer base grew to several thousand customers visiting often and some have been with me for 4 decades! In 2017 it was time to move on to other things. With the help of SCORE mentoring I sold my company. The new owner is a young man from Chicago who also sought help from SCORE and successfully developed a business plan to purchase it!! I now enjoy mentoring him and many other SCORE clients in my retirement.

Over these years I became licensed to engage in international business, learning the complexity of non user-friendly and unfair government regulations governing my trade; I participated in many trade and craft shows; I became and still am an appraiser for collectors and institutions like the Smithsonian and other museums, who need expert valuations for IRS purposes. I became a model in my field respected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as one of the only businesses complying with international import and export of shipments.

I have been mentored by SCORE counselors and co-counselors since the 70s, grateful for their help, advice, coaching, inspiration and other support. I needed to face numerous challenges to pursue my dream and their coaching and guidance made it all possible. Because of this I now touch lives of others and have tools to help them plan and become successful in their dreams. Now, in my retirement, I enjoy coaching SCORE clients.

I can help develop business plans and ideas, help create a nitche for some businesses, assist setting up bookkeeping with QuickBooks, and website marketing
