Building upon the success of its weekly small business mentoring program at the Lamanda Park branch, the Pasadena Public Library and SCORE of Greater Los Angeles is expanding the program to Santa Catalina, Washington Avenue Branch, beginning May 1.

Richard “RP” Mader, a 20-year certified SCORE mentor, who also offers a monthly workshop, Starting a Business: What You Need to Know, conducts in person meetings with local Pasadena residents who are seeking counsel about expanding or launching a small business.  The one-on-one meetings are available via appointment, which can be scheduled through Pasadena Public Library or call 626-744-7266.

A lifelong entrepreneur, the Pasadena resident, turned his youthful experience as a paperboy into a business, becoming the biggest distributor of newspapers, magazines, and books on the west coast.  His son, who he continues to mentor, now runs Mader News Inc.

“The individuals we meet are genuinely committed to the challenge of growing or starting a company and really appreciate the opportunity to engage in person with an experienced mentor,” said Mader.  “I often follow up on the in-person meetings with meetings over Zoom.”

“Thanks to the mentoring I received from Richard and another SCORE mentor he introduced to help me with marketing, I was really able to grow my business,” said Jeisy P., a health and life insurance agent who took advantage of the library program.  “It’s a great program, and it’s free!”

“Our collaboration with SCORE is part of our overall commitment to serving the needs of the Pasadena community,” said Pasadena Library Services Director Wei Zhang.  “We are thrilled that Richard and his fellow mentors will enable us to expand the program.”

Added Tim McDonald, Director of Libraries, “The Pasadena Public Library is pleased to support small businesses in Pasadena through SCORE’s free and confidential one-on-one mentoring program at the library. SCORE is the nation’s largest network of former business professionals and executives. The expertise these mentors provide to existing and emerging small businesses creates great opportunities for the local business community. As a resource center for the community, the Pasadena Public Library recognizes the value of this information service provides to business people and the support it provides to making people’s aspirations a reality.”
