How To Make Sure Your Website Is Optimized For Mobile

The mobile-first index is here and it’s quite a thing already. If your website is not optimized for mobile devices, you’re likely missing out on a lot of traffic, not to mention making it hard for you to grow as Google now favors the mobile-optimized sites big time.

If you’re not sure whether your site is properly optimized for mobile devices or not, checking if it ticks the following boxes may help.

Your site is sufficiently responsive for mobile devices

While the majority of the sites now seem to have a mobile version, the problem is that it’s nowhere near as responsive as their desktop version. This means that the users browsing the same site on their mobile devices end up having a much poorer user experience than when using their desktop version.

In order to fix this, you need to make sure that the essential elements of your desktop site are easily viewable and accessible on its mobile version as well. Similarly, as mobile users may not find it pleasing to browse around a lot, a great way to boost their overall user experience is to analyze and identify the content or information they tend to look for, and serving it to them without making them browse around a lot.

Your content (text) is easily viewable and readable

One of the biggest pain points mobile users experience is having to zoom in and zoom out when reading the content on the mobile version of websites. This is a big no and Google certainly seems to frown upon content or text that’s hard to read or requires zooming in for mobile users.

If your mobile site doesn’t tick this box, you may want to work on the font size and design a bit to make sure it does.

Your mobile site loads fast enough

One of the common causes of lower conversions on mobile devices seems to be a sluggish load time. Users using their mobile devices seem to be more impatient than the ones using a desktop device, and hence it’s imperative to allow them to get where they want to on your website as fast as possible.

While there’s no particular number that you can termed as standard loading time for mobile devices, it’s believed that any mobile website that takes longer than 3 seconds to fully load up isn’t properly optimized for mobile devices. If that’s the case with your website as well, you may want to resize and optimize your images, which are often one of the major contributors to slower loading times.

Your mobile site follows the less is more approach

As we discussed above, mobile users are impatient and don’t want to spend a lot of time getting what they want, even if they are getting something else that may be useful as well. This holds extremely true for social media sites and when searching on Google, you want the fastest results. In other words, your highly detailed, in-depth content may not cut it when it comes to pleasing mobile users.

If mobile users form a crucial part of your overall traffic, it makes sense for you to put in some effort into developing a different content strategy specific to mobile devices, and making the information clear and concise, and getting straight to the point without any fluff.
