SCORE client Michelle Deller contacted Score in November of 2016 and was assigned to Jerry Glenn as her mentor. Jerry served as Michelle’s sounding board throughout the process of starting Steep Adventures, and has become such an important part of Michelle’s personal journey that in March of 2017, she began working in the SCORE office to assist with the Small Business Awards Luncheon (SBAL), as well as helping with various projects—including the BB&T grant with Millersville University for traineeships.

Steep Adventures organizes adventure fundraising trips for nonprofits and charitable causes to support specific projects. The main goal for Steep Adventures, when possible, is to connect the adventure location with the project being supported to create a deeper tie to the people and country in which the adventure takes place.

Most recently, Michelle traveled to Peru with Steep Adventures. The trip was made to support a private school called PROMESA in Cusco, Peru. The school was founded by Eastern Mennonite Missions (headquartered in Salunga, PA). Nine trekkers from all over the U.S. joined Michelle for a 61-mile hike around Ausangate Mountain, the highest mountain in the Cusco Region at 20,945 ft.

“We hiked for five days over four mountain passes with elevations over 16,000 feet and slept in two camps sitting at over 15,000 feet,” she recalls. “The trek was challenging—we faced every type of weather (rain, sleet, hail, snow, wind, and sun), and the altitude made it even harder, but the views were stunning.” A highlight of their journey was reaching the Rainbow Mountains, a mineral stripped array of colors in the soil.

Following the hike, the group was able to visit the school, PROMESA—the focus of their fundraising efforts. The group took a tour of the classrooms and assembled the nearly 300 students for a special dance performed by one of the secondary classes. PROMESA has outgrown their current location and has purchased land, but are in need of a road and bridge before building can begin. The efforts of Steep Adventures have raised $47,798 (as of early November 2017) towards the road and bridge project.
