Meet New SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon Mentor John Bomberger. Our new mentor’s background includes a BS, Business Administration from Eastern Mennonite University. Between college years John spent three years in Central America teaching school and coordinating relief efforts for Mennonite Central Committee. After college, he returned to Lancaster County to join the family retail business, Bomberger’s in Lititz, as a fourth-generation owner/manager.
John left the family business in 1991 and moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia to attend seminary. After graduating from seminary, he accepted the CEO position with Choice Books, a direct-store-delivery inspirational book distribution company that services more than 11,000 book displays in independent, small chain and big box retail stores across the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. During his tenure as CEO John learned a lot about business strategy, retail/wholesale sales & marketing, operations, finance and personnel in these leadership positions. In 2017, he retired and moved back to Lancaster County.
John’s life of service to his community did not end with his retirement and he soon sought volunteer opportunities that made use of his abilities as a way of giving back to the community.
“I believe small businesses and non-profit organizations are a vital part of our community and local economy. So, when I learned about SCORE through a friend, and after reading several news articles written by SCORE mentors, I thought perhaps my business experience and knowledge could help some business owners, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits develop their organization’s vision and mission. Being a SCORE mentor seems like a great way to give back to the community.”
