SCORE Kansas City Presents:

2023 Access to Money Event

This 10-part conference was held June 5, 2023 organized by the SCORE chapter leadership and led by Linda Zappulla and Geoff Meiteen. Two hundred people were present at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center: SCORE clients and new attendees, SCORE-certified mentors, and our community and governmental partners.

The conference was preceded by two years of successive Black Business Entrepreneur Events. Participants in these very successful programs, as well as our SCORE mentor clients, have an upfront need for funding to make their business and non-profit plans come to fruition.

In response, the chapter leadership, led by Karen Foelsch, chair, and Ray Berger, SCORE Regional Vice President, organized and helped fund this effort.

The conference focused on how start-ups and existing businesses and non-profits can utilize both traditional and new alternative sources of money. Underserved communities are less likely to have banking relationships, nor family wealth to fund their dreams.

What Happened at the Event?

The opening session was in the form of a podcast, with our Event MC, Lauren Conaway, interviewing Matt Condon, a very successful Kansas City entrepreneur, and E.W. Kauffman Foundation trustee.

The afternoon sessions included three Pitch Contests with nine finalists and three overall winners.

Great thanks to Sunflower Bank, the lead Business Event sponsor, who also provided the Pitch Winner prizes. And thanks to SCORE, powered by the SBA, for a special Event grant that made it all possible.
