How Did Your Business Get Started?

Glenn, a retired Pike Township Indiana firefighter came to SCORE after he had purchased a 4 bedroom modern cabin in Brown County, Indiana. The cabin is on 13 acres and has an additional separate two-story building.

Glenn planned to convert it to a bed and breakfast and rent each room separately. After gaining a better understanding of the layout of the cabin and the 13 acres surrounding it I  suggested that he simplify things by offering the entire facility to families or small groups of friends and thus dealing with one account at a time.

It was suggested to Glenn that he connect with Airbnb as well as Vacation Rentals by Owner or VRBO and put his facility's availability on the internet.

Initially, Glenn had a myriad of intelligent questions about the operation of the facility. I provided the answers as best I could (pre-opening) but stressed that much of the answers would come with experience. He took to this venture like a duck to water and is doing well. Yes, he's encountered difficult guests and has experienced some inconveniences, but he has done well and states that things are going well.

Since he opened in the spring of 2016 he has hosted over 300 guests and has advanced reservations for well into 2017. Glenn is currently making plans to convert the separate two-story building into an event center for banquets, meetings, and weddings.
