My successes.

I started my company, Blue Light Leadership, because of a promise I made to myself years ago: I would do everything in my power to stop bad bosses from ruining people’s lives. Early in my career, I worked under leaders who undermined, humiliated, and dismissed me, and those experiences eventually led me to clinical depression. In my healing, I discovered Positive Psychology, emotional intelligence, and the science of flourishing—and I realized I could turn my pain into purpose.

That promise grew into a business. I first opened my coaching practice under a different name, then officially re-launched as Blue Light Leadership four years ago. My mission is to help brilliant technical leaders become brilliant people leaders—so organizations can keep their top talent and create healthier, more human workplaces.

This year has been one of the most meaningful milestones of my entrepreneurial journey. I launched my first book, Hard to Handle, at an in-person event filled with community, support, and joy—and it became a bestseller. Seeing that success come to life was surreal, and I absolutely could not have done it without my SCORE mentor, Jan.

Jan has been a steady partner through the highs and lows. She has helped me think strategically, make difficult decisions with confidence, and keep going when entrepreneurship felt overwhelming. Her presence has been a grounding force—reminding me of my mission when things got tough and celebrating every win with genuine enthusiasm.

My business was born from lived experience, shaped by research, and strengthened by mentorship. Today, I’m proud of the work we do, proud of the impact we’re making, and deeply grateful to SCORE for walking beside me on this journey.

What do you do?

Blue Light Leadership helps brilliant technical leaders become brilliant people leaders—so companies can retain their top talent and build thriving, human-centered cultures. We specialize in leadership development grounded in the science of Positive Psychology, Emotional Intelligence, and evidence-based coaching.

We offer a suite of services for small to mid-sized organizations, including:

  1. One-to-one executive coaching for technical, engineering, and operational leaders
  2. Group and team coaching that improves communication, accountability, and collaboration
  3. Leadership assessments, including Genos Emotional Intelligence, DiSC, CliftonStrengths, and custom cultural diagnostics
  4. Interactive training and workshops focused on engagement, psychological safety, conflict navigation, and people-leadership skills
  5. Speaking engagements on employee engagement, generational leadership, and transforming “hard to handle” employees

What sets us apart is our approach: we work from the inside out. Instead of trying to “fix employees,” we focus on helping leaders develop the awareness, emotional intelligence, and relational skills that naturally increase engagement. Our work is deeply human, highly practical, and grounded in research—and the results are measurable in morale, retention, and performance.

I also recently published the bestselling leadership fable Hard to Handle, which gives organizations a relatable and research-backed roadmap for transforming difficult leaders into emotionally intelligent, self-aware people leaders. Companies use the book for team learning, book clubs, and leadership cohorts, and it has expanded the reach and impact of our coaching work.

At its core, Blue Light Leadership exists to create workplaces where people feel valued, connected, and able to thrive. We help leaders grow, teams communicate better, and organizations build cultures they’re proud of.

What inspired you to start your business?

Blue Light Leadership was born from a mix of lived experience, professional passion, and a moment of clarity after becoming a mother. Early in my career, I worked under leaders who undermined me, dismissed me, and created environments that eroded my confidence. Those painful experiences eventually led to an emotional breakdown and a long journey back to myself—one that included discovering Positive Psychology, emotional intelligence, and the science of human thriving. Those tools changed my life, and I knew I wanted to help others avoid the suffering I endured.

Years later, after having my first child, I tried returning to the workforce—but every job I applied for paid less than what I would need to pay for childcare. It was a stark realization: if I wanted meaningful work, financial stability, and the ability to raise my child(ren), I would need to hire myself. And if I was going to build something, it needed to align with the mission that had been on my heart for years.

So I launched my business to help leaders become more aware, compassionate, and effective—so fewer people would end up in toxic workplaces like the ones I survived. I wanted to create a coaching practice that didn’t just teach skills but truly transformed how leaders show up.

That decision allowed me to continue my purpose-driven work, support my family, and build something that reflects my deepest values. Today, that mission lives on through Blue Light Leadership and through my bestselling book, Hard to Handle, which gives organizations a roadmap for changing leadership from the inside out.

Becoming a mother didn’t pause my mission—it sharpened it. It inspired me to create a business that helps leaders grow while allowing me to model courage, resilience, and possibility for my children.

What's special about your business?

Blue Light Leadership is different because we don’t just coach behavior—we transform the whole person from the inside out. Most leadership development focuses on surface-level skills: communication tips, feedback frameworks, performance expectations. Those matter—but they’re not enough. The real breakthroughs happen when leaders understand why they show up the way they do and what’s happening beneath the surface.

What makes my business truly unique is that I’m trained not only in Positive Psychology and Emotional Intelligence, but also in methods that work directly with the subconscious mind. Many leaders don’t struggle because they lack skills—they struggle because old beliefs, past experiences, and emotional “baggage” are quietly influencing their reactions, confidence, and relationships.

When I coach leaders, we go deeper than traditional coaching allows. We identify and clear the limiting beliefs, outdated patterns, and emotional blocks that are getting in the way of their best leadership. This creates real, lasting change—not temporary behavior shifts.

My approach blends science, strategy, and subconscious work:

  • Positive Psychology to strengthen resilience, mindset, and engagement
  • Emotional Intelligence to build awareness, empathy, and connection
  • Subconscious clearing techniques to release the internal barriers that create conflict, defensiveness, or self-doubt

The result is a leader who is not only more skilled, but more grounded, self-aware, confident, and aligned.

That’s the magic of Blue Light Leadership: we help leaders transform from within so they can lead with clarity, courage, and impact—without losing themselves or their top talent along the way.

How SCORE helped.

SCORE has been one of the most influential supports in my business journey. From the moment I connected with my mentor, Jan, everything about how I thought, planned, and led my business began to shift. SCORE didn’t just give me advice—it gave me a foundation, a partner in problem-solving, and a steady source of confidence during some of the toughest seasons of entrepreneurship.

Jan’s mentorship has been invaluable. She helped me navigate major decisions, think strategically when I felt overwhelmed, and stay grounded when emotions ran high. There were times when I questioned the direction of my business, moments when contracts unexpectedly dried up, and periods when growth felt painfully slow. Jan walked me through every one of those challenges. She helped me see options I couldn’t see myself, reframe setbacks as opportunities, and build systems and plans that made my business stronger.

SCORE also gave me practical tools and clarity. Through templates, planning guides, and structured conversations, I learned how to run my business like a business—not just a passion project. Their resources helped me refine my services, understand cash flow, plan for scaling, and stay focused on long-term sustainability.

One of the biggest impacts came this year, leading up to the launch of my book, Hard to Handle. It was the biggest project of my career, and there were countless decisions to make—timelines, partnerships, marketing, budgeting, event logistics. Jan was there for every milestone. Her guidance helped me stay organized, confident, and anchored, and that support played a direct role in the success of the launch and the book becoming a bestseller.

SCORE didn’t just help me grow my business—they helped me grow into the leader my business needed. Their mentorship, structure, and heart-forward support have shaped Blue Light Leadership in powerful ways, and I’m deeply grateful for the difference they’ve made in my journey.

Working with SCORE has helped me achieve several meaningful milestones—both tangible and deeply personal. With Jan’s mentorship, I’ve been able to weather the inevitable storms of entrepreneurship with resilience and clarity. She believed in me during times when I doubted myself, and that steady belief made it possible for me to keep moving forward when the path felt uncertain.

With SCORE’s support, I’ve strengthened the foundation of my business, stayed focused during pivotal transitions, and made important decisions that protected and advanced Blue Light Leadership. One of my biggest successes has been the launch of my book, Hard to Handle, which became a bestseller. That achievement came from years of work, but SCORE played a significant role by helping me plan thoughtfully, stay committed when things got tough, and trust my vision.

I’ve also been able to sustain and grow my business through unexpected challenges, navigate revenue ups and downs, and continue operating as a thriving coaching and leadership development firm. SCORE helped me build the confidence and strategic mindset needed to keep going—and keep growing.

My greatest success with SCORE isn’t just a single milestone; it’s the fact that I’m still here, stronger, clearer, and more aligned than ever. Their support helped me become the leader my business needed me to be.

What's great about my mentor?

My mentor, Jan, is extraordinary. I often joke that she’s not just my business mentor—she’s my business therapist. She has a remarkable way of listening deeply, especially when I’m frustrated, overwhelmed, or trying to navigate a situation I don’t fully understand. She helps me slow down, think clearly, and separate emotion from strategy without ever making me feel judged.

What makes Jan truly special is how well she knows me. Over the years we’ve worked together, she has learned how I think, what I value, and where I sometimes get in my own way. Because of that, I trust her completely. She’s “been there, done that,” and her guidance comes from real experience, not theory.

In a world where a lot of business advice can feel cold or transactional, Jan leads with heart. She genuinely champions young business leaders, and I feel that in every interaction—from the thoughtful follow-up emails she sends after our meetings, to the way she shows up fully present with no agenda other than helping me succeed.

She sees me. She supports me. And she consistently helps me become a stronger, clearer, and more grounded leader. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

"Your past doesn’t disqualify you; it prepares you. Everything you’ve lived gives you the insight someone else needs. When you lead from the inside out, who you are shapes how you lead, far more than any title, tactic, or tool.

And most of all: keep going. The world needs what you're building—even on the days you can’t see the impact yet."

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

Respect the mentors time and energy. If you say you are going to show up. Have respect. Show up and be prepared to talk about what you need help with. They want to see you succeed, but you have to want to succeed.
