Do you know the saying about the apple not falling far from the tree? Meet Cynthia South, founder of the South Company, and her son Mike Thomas. Both are full of energy, love creative challenges, and have a knack for communicating with impact. With this shared DNA it’s not surprising that they both pursued marketing careers; Cynthia in the health field, and Mike at the University of South Carolina.
Although both enjoyed success working for others, they had a dream….to come together and form their own marketing company; a firm that might someday become Aiken’s premiere agency. They acted on that
Aiken County is home to about 25,000 senior citizens (age 65 & over). While families and our medical community do an excellent job providing care for independent seniors and those who are sick or frail, there are two underserved groups:
- Seniors who are relatively healthy but become socially isolated as they age. This often leads to physical, mental, and emotional decline.
- Families caring for loved ones with dementia. These families often need a place that offers their loved ones socialization, activities, and for the caregiver…. a daytime partner to share the responsibility.

Rearden’s Tax & Business Services opened for business in October 2014. Located in Warrenville, SC, the Company provides income tax, bookkeeping, financial counseling, and other accounting-related services. Warrenville and the surrounding community are low-income areas, given median household income that lags the South Carolina average by 60%. As a family-owned and operated business, the Owners wanted to provide their services at prices the community could afford.
