Whitlock Building Services: Resilience and Strategic Growth
Whitlock Building Services (WBS) is a Grapevine, Texas-based, family owned and run, building services company who has been in business over 15 years. The principals, Regina Whitlock (CEO) and Bruce Whitlock Sr (COO) began the company providing residential cleaning services in their local area. As their client list grew (as well as their business acumen) they used their former career corporate training to pivot their target market more towards Construction Cleaning Services and eventually added Commercial Building Services. Along the way, their organization gradually grew to over 150 employees. As their client list, employee base and their catalog of services grew, their top line revenue increased, too.
The Whitlock's engaged a SCORE Mentor in May of 2020. This was a fragile time for small businesses due to the COVID pandemic. This didn’t stop the creativity of WBS. They quickly realized that they would need to pivot, once again, to serve their target market - they became COVID Certified (Global Biorisk Advisory Council, a division of ISSA—The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association). This move became the catalyst for their survival and eventual growth spurt during 2021 and 2022.
The SCORE Mentor met with Regina and her Sales Department and organized regularly scheduled “Funnel and Forecast Review” meetings to put focus on Sales’ metrics (Funnel and Sales growth). The SCORE Mentor also spent time with the WBS principals to create a 5 year Strategic Plan, creating business goals for the 1, 3, and 5 year views. WBS’ success as a small business has been based on the Whitlock’s openness to accept input and help from outside resources, their core commitment to customer satisfaction and their commitment to their employees.
