Broward SCORE, the SBA, and AARP held the 4th Encore Entrepreneur Day at the Alvin Sherman Library of Nova Southeastern University yesterday.
The event was attended by close to 70 entrepreneurs. Aimed specifically at people 50+ years of age the symposium featured speakers with a wealth of knowledge on starting a business later in life.
SCORE Volunteers George Gremse, Nancy Leve, Joe Ewart, Paul Bosley, and Michal Bush recounted the paths they took from working in the corporate world to starting their own businesses in consulting, restaurants, internet marketing, travel, education, and tutoring
SCORE Volunteers Angelica Love Valentine and George Gremse informed attendees about SCORE services and discussed business counseling and workshop programs.
Paul Bosley and Nancy Kalikow Maxwell participated in the “Expert Consultation Sessions” where they met individuals for 30 minute sessions. Paul discussed financing and Nancy spoke about grants.

George Gremse was a judge for the final presentations of Workforce One's innovative StartUp Quest Program.
On November 14th 16 teams pitched their tech start up plans to a panel of judges.
The first-place winners, were Healical, a cloud-based platform to aid developers in producing next-generation apps for healthcare, based on FIU technology.
NuPhoresis also took first place in its class for the development of a transdermal drug delivery system
The program is a series of 5 workshops organized to take an entrepreneur through disciplined steps to address the key factors that can help insure success in starting a business. The workshops take attendees through business concept development, identifying customer groups, evaluating the competition, setting a pricing strategy, creating a marketing message, estimating start-up costs, projecting revenue, expenses, and profits, and much more.
Close to 300 people have participated in the program over the past 36 months.
This last session was held in conjunction with Hispanic Unity of Florida’s
Broward SCORE led a workshop today on Strategic Planning for the Kingdom Entrepreneur members of the Bethany Baptist Church in Sunrise Florida. The faith based entrepreneurs and small business owners within the ministry approached SCORE to work with them on moving their businesses forward. Chapter Chairman George Gremse and Director of Administration Ed Joffe facilitated the hands-on workshop on-site at the church. The participants represented a number of different backgrounds – construction, retail clothing sales, Telecommunications, event planning, non-profits, creative design, etc. The
Broward SCORE in conjunction with the African American Research Library and Cultural Center held a business training workshop on owning a business. Thinking of Owning a Business is a two hour workshop that deals with what is involved in owning and operating a business.
The program covers the many hats a business owner must wear. It discusses the myths and realities of entrepreneurship and the key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Different ways of becoming a business owner are reviewed – starting your own business, buying an existing business, franchising, etc.
