The Blooms were able to obtain funding for their franchise in Oakland from the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan program. They also worked with the Oakland Business Development System and Main Street Launch. Their business continues to generate jobs for caregivers and eldercare experts.
An MBA prepared Benjamin to run a business, but his SCORE mentor, Jim Carlson, helped him secure a loan. SCORE also encouraged the Blooms to network and to further develop their marketing plans. “I used to feel like I had something to prove and that asking for help meant I had failed,” says Benjamin. “But, a mentor wants you to succeed. They’re in your corner, and if you succeed, they succeed.”
