Give Back to the Local Community

Small businesses need mentoring and educational support to be successful. Since 1964, SCORE has provided expert volunteer mentoring to more than 11 million entrepreneurs and small business owners across the United States. And the demand for mentoring has grown exponentially during the pandemic because of the many challenges faced by business owners.

Here, in Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia, SCORE has had a direct and effective impact on businesses and job creation.

To continue to meet the demand, we are looking for people with diverse backgrounds and experiences to serve as knowledgeable business mentors for small businesses in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia.

The Many Reasons to Mentor

SCORE mentors are deeply experienced businessmen and women -- some still working, others retired -- looking to share their knowledge and support the start-up and growth of local small businesses. Read and hear why they volunteer and what they get out of it.

I mentor because

“My SCORE mentor was stupendous in that he was always available to speak to me especially at my lowest moments when funding seemed impossible.”

- Sandra Vazquez
Owner/Founder of SWT Fitness (Dunkirk, MD)

“Having been educated at The Culinary Institute of America Hyde Park, NY, I had no training on the business side of the culinary field. My SCORE mentor was invaluable in helping me develop and refine my business plan which ultimately helped me to secure a loan from my personal banker.”

- Gregory James
Head Baker/Owner, Josef’s Sweets (Easton, MD)

“My SCORE mentor taught me that I can have premium clients. I have to offer premium services and price premium deals. I learned to ignore my initial feelings of “imposter syndrome” because I have more experience in this than others. I have a lot to offer.”

- Danielle Neal
Founder, Digital with Danielle (Baltimore, MD)

“After the first session with my mentor I came away with so many ideas that I wanted to put into practice. Not having the experience but knowing that my mentor was going to guide me, it changed everything. After our first two meetings I came away with such a stronger sense of --- I can do this and there are resources and people that can help me make it successful.”

- Elizabeth O’Donnell
Founder/CEO of Aaliyah in Action (Washington, DC)
