Frequently Asked Questions: Counseling, Workshops, Referrals, Loans

How much does mentoring cost?
It is free. Request counseling now...

Who are SCORE mentors?
They are successful executives and business owners who have volunteered their wisdom and experience to help you at no cost.

How long will a SCORE mentor work with me?
You can use a SCORE counselor as often as you wish.  If you begin a relationship with a counselor, he or she can become your mentor, working with you over time to build your business from idea to startup to growth.  They can also work with you as you write and refine your business plan.

How do I find a mentor with the expertise I am looking for?
All mentors are trained to handle the initial interview.  They may then refer you to experts in many skill areas and numerous industries.

Do you have Spanish-speaking counselors?
Yes.  Please complete a mentor request form and you will be paired with one.

I am already in business, do you provide counseling or other services for an existing business owner?
Yes. You can get individual counseling or we have a program we call the Business Checkup which is exclusively for existing businesses. You are assigned a team of SCORE counselors who do an extensive assessment of your business and help you make the changes you need to make.

If I am starting a business, should I attend a workshop before I get counseling?
We highly recommend it.  Workshops will point you in the right direction and give you vital information so you make the right decisions about your business.  You will get more out of private counseling if you have gone through our Small Business Simple Steps WorkshopsClick here for workshops.

SCORE Denver offers a series of Small Business Simple Steps Workshops for start-ups, several Small Business Managing Smarter Seminars for existing businesses, a variety of webinars, as well as custom-designed workshops and programs. All of our workshops are reasonably priced and a great value. View our current Workshops here.

I am just thinking about my business idea, do you offer any classes for me?
Yes, we do. Our Simple Steps Workshop Program is designed for you.  More...

Do you have programs for existing small businesses and small business owners?
Yes, we do and we are developing more every year. We try to keep up with issues small businesses are facing and develop programs to meet those needs. In addition, we provide a "Business Check-up" service where a team of SCORE counselors work with you and give you guidance and help.

Can SCORE develop and present a small business workshop, especially for my group (company, association, meeting)?
Yes, we can. We frequently work with companies, associations, professional groups, and others to personalize our standard content, develop a class with new small business content, or create a special program based on a topic of your choice.  Depending on the content and length of the program we may negotiate a reimbursement or fee arrangement, but some very short presentations can be provided free of charge.  Contact us for more information.

Do I have to go downtown to attend the classes?
No, we rotate our classes to various, convenient locations around the metro area.  Due to ongoing Covid 19 restrictions, most of our classes are live and online via Zoom.

Loans and Grants

Can you help me get a business loan?

We can advise you as you develop your business plan to help you prepare for the bank.  Neither the SBA nor SCORE Denver makes loans.  The SBA guarantees loans made by commercial banks to qualified small businesses, but you have to apply at a bank.

Are grants available for small businesses?

We have all seen them; late-night infomercials, websites, and reference guides, advertising "millions in free money "don't believe the hype!"  So says the website While for-profit small businesses are considered a category, the grants are awarded based on fulfilling the requirements of the grant. Your best bet is to go to the government website and get current and accurate information.
