My successes.

Premed Peers has provided over 300+ classes to over 2000+ students since 2020. More than 200 are currently enrolled in the prep course. Premed Peers has 30-40 enrolled volunteers, including Board, Prep course management, and Tutors. Premed Peers has built a great community where the next generation of physicians can support and learn from each other.

What do you do?

Premed Peers is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that offers both free and affordable MCAT tutoring and medical school application consulting to underserved premedical students virtually.  Volunteers in Premed Peers, who have all scored in the 90th percentile in their respective subjects, take pride in helping fellow students prepare for the MCAT and doing their part to make entry into medical school less dependent on a student's background.

What inspired you to start your business?

As the first and significant step to becoming a doctor, The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) takes great effort to pass. The eight-hour exam covers everything from biology, chemistry, and physics to psychology, sociology, and English.  To succeed, students or prospective doctors must invest a lot of time, energy, and money into their MCAT preparation.  According to the statistics, the cost ranges from $1,000 to $7,000 since currently available prep courses, such as Kaplan or Princeton Review, are costly. “Medical education barriers such as the cost of a prep course or lack of support should not be the reason why one does not succeed”, said Simrat Jassal, who founded Premed Peers to help medical students to overcome these barriers.

What is your relationship with SCORE? SCORE client How SCORE helped.

In the beginning, Simrat reached out to SCORE of Central Virginia with her initial thoughts about the business. Robert Lenahan, a SCORE mentor who has expertise in business planning and operations was assigned to mentor Simrat. Mr. Lenahan’s wealth of knowledge and experience supports Simrat’s nonprofit. “Bob provides encouragement, and every conversation leaves me excited and hopeful to take my nonprofit to the next level”, Simrat said.  “It has been amazing working with Bob for the past year and I can't wait to see how we continue to grow.”
